Online STL to OBJ Converter

Drop an STL file to preview it in 3D and download it as OBJ. Everything runs in your browser: nothing is uploaded.

Drop your STL file hereor click to choose a file. It never leaves your device.

How to convert STL to OBJ

  1. 1

Drag your STL file onto the box above, or click it to choose a file.

  2. 2

Check the model and its dimensions in the 3D preview.

  3. 3

If it is lying on the wrong side, rotate it 90° on X, Y or Z.

  4. 4

Click “Download OBJ”: the file is created on your device in a few seconds.

When to use OBJ

  1. 1

To edit a printable model in Blender or another 3D program.

  2. 2

To import a part into a game engine or a rendering tool.

  3. 3

To share a model with software that does not read STL.

STL and OBJ, side by side

STL is the standard of 3D printing: it only stores triangles, with no colors or units. OBJ is a classic of 3D modeling and animation: Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Unity and Unreal open it directly.

The converter merges repeated vertices, so the OBJ is usually smaller than a text STL, and writes it with Y up, the convention of most 3D programs. Measurements stay in millimeters.

Frequently asked questions

Is the STL to OBJ converter free?

Yes. You can convert files for free, without an account and without watermarks.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The STL is read and converted entirely in your browser and never leaves your device.

Will the OBJ have colors or textures?

No. STL files do not store colors or textures, so the OBJ contains only the geometry. You can add materials later in your 3D program.

Why does my model look rotated in Blender?

OBJ uses Y up, while STL uses Z up. The converter takes care of it, so the model should import standing. If the original STL was already rotated, use the rotate buttons before downloading.

Are the measurements kept?

Yes. The OBJ keeps the same size in millimeters as the STL.
