Why 3MF instead of STL
3MF was created by the 3D printing industry to replace STL. It stores the units, so the model always opens at the right size, and it is a compressed package, so the same model takes much less space.
It also shares vertices between triangles, which avoids the small gaps that sometimes appear in STL files.
